The 27 Club: The curse that takes away stars at the age of 27
Rock stars sure
lead a dangerous lifestyle, with all those drugs, tours, and excessively
energetic live performances. But these guys went a little bit too early than
what you might expect. Some relate their deaths to a myth, a story hard to
believe but that sure is interesting. Today we’re tackling a deadly topic,
we’re looking at “The 27 Club”:

Robert Johnson:

Robert Johnson:
The whole story started when
Blues’ artist Robert Johnson falling asleep on a crossroad, a few moments after
he was woken up by a mysterious shadow who offered him a deal, the shadow told
him that it would make him a legendary guitarist in exchange for his soul that
it would come to take at age 27. Johnson accepted the deal, turned out the
shadow was Lucifer himself who took Robert’s guitar, tuned it, played few notes
and returned it to him before disappearing once and for all. Robert Johnson recorded
30 songs that made a major impact on Blues’ music and were a source of
inspiration for many artist. When he was 27 of age, Robert Johnson died in some
very mysterious circumstances that many claim it was Devil who came to take
what belongs to him.
Brian Jones:
Second victim of this myth was
Rolling Stones’ guitarist and sitar player, Brian Jones. Many of you thought
about Mick Jagger when I said Rolling Stones, but believe it or not, Jones was
the most talented of them all, and he was the reason behind all their success.
Strangely, the most talented of them all, and even more weird, the guitarist,
died at age 27 after he drowned in his own swimming pool.
Jimi Hendrix:
Leading us to the Golden age of
Rock N’ Roll, the 70’s were marked by the appearance of the best guitarist of
all times, Jimi Hendrix. Sure he was talented enough to play guitar with his
teeth, but Jimi also left this world at age 27 after drowning too, except that
he drowned is his own vomit.
Janis Joplin:
Always in this 70’s atmosphere,
Janis Joplin was to follow them after dying on a heroin overdose. Many claim
that is was Janis that started this whole “Feminine Rock stars” thing, and
opened the door to other women in this music genre.
Jim Morrison:
Talking of doors, vocalist of
the amazing group “The Doors”, Jim Morrison was also known for his legendary
poems and his ability to come up with fabulous lyrics. He also died at age 27,
but many claim that he faked his own death to get away from this whole
atmosphere.
Kurt Cobain:
This story continued with many
other artists, the most famous and worldwide known of them all is Nirvana’s
vocalist, lead guitar player and founder, Kurt Cobain. Born Kurt Donald Cobain,
Kurt had a lot of psychological issue during his life due to his harsh
childhood. He started smoking Marijuana and drinking alcohol at age 12, but
none of these were enough to make him escape his reality, that’s why he started
listening to punk rock and started playing his guitar. When Kurt founded
Nirvana, the world was happy because this marked the return of Rock N’ Roll.
But at age 27, Kurt died after shooting himself in the head. Many claim that he
was brave enough to end his deal with Lucifer by himself, but many others claim
that he was killed by his wife Courtney Love.
Pete Ham:
April 24th 1975 Pete Ham, the main guitarist
and vocalist of the famous band “Badfinger” decided after many production
problems and financial issue that he’d better hang himself up.
Amy Winehouse:
Another feminine presence in the 27 club, is legendary British soul
artist Amy Winehouse. A lot of you might know her for her chart topping album
Back to Black that had a huge impact, not only on Soul music, but also on Blue
and Jazz. She was so talented that she could sing, play guitar and drums on a
really high level. Like any other international artist, she was reported to
have been hospitalized many times for overdose of heroin, ecstasy, cocaine and
alcohol. This drugs and drinking problem, combined with her fragile health, led
to her dying too early than expected, but still with all that talent, no doubt
that Lucifer took her according to the pact.
Many other artists died at this age and most of them in very mysterious
conditions. One question is asked here, what music would sound like if these
guys didn’t die?
