5 mythical creatures that actually existed

While I was watch the movie “boyhood”, there was a scene where Mason, the kid, asks his father whether magic exists or not, to which he answered: “What if I told you a story about how underneath the ocean, there was this giant sea mammal that used sonar and sang songs and it was so big that its heart was the size of a car and you could crawl through the arteries? I mean, you'd think that was pretty magical, right?”, ad in case you didn’t figure it out, he was talking about whales.

This answer had me thinking about all the legends and myths we know, and how some of them might have some truth in them, so I made a research and found out that indeed a lot of myths did actually exist. So here are some of the myths that actually existed:

1- The dire wolf:

We all loved those huge wolves that each of Ned Stark’s sons had, and admired how big and majestic they were, but believe it or not, dire wolves did exist thousands of years ago alongside early men and the mega-fauna. But, as the mega-fauna began to go extinct, dire wolves lost their primary food souse and therefore went extinct themselves.

2- Amazon women:

Amazons were long believed to be just some tales told by ancient Greek travelers about a tribe of fierce women who hated men and fought as hard. And although there is some truth to that, Amazons were different from their mythologized version. In fact, Amazons are Scythian female warriors that fought alongside their men, as was suggested by archeological evidences. And yes, amazons did get married and even had kids as opposed to the legends saying they killed their new born boys.

3- Hobbits

In 2003, excavations in the island of Flores in Indonesia uncovered a new species of tiny people that are not humans. The excavations uncovered a three foot tall skeleton with a head third the size of a human’s, along with some tools indicating the presence of a civilization.

4- Kraken:

The legend of the kraken has been long believed to be inspired from giant squids, which compared to the epicenes of the myth tales can be a bit of a let-down. But another species of squid has been discovered, the colossal squid, which is a little closer to the kraken than the giant squid in terms of size, since the colossal squid is about 14 meters in length, and has sharp hooks in its limbs.

5- Dragons:

Everyone at some point of their lives watched or read something about Dragons. Those majestic flying and fire breathing lizard like creatures have been present in our lives be it in movies, books or video games. But before you get too excited about real life dragons, let me tell you that the real-life version is not even close to how epic the legends versions are. The Megalania is an extinct giant goanna that lived in Australia. The Megalania didn’t fly nor breathe fire, bit it was a Komodo like dragon that reached 8 meters in length, and spat a poisonous saliva that made people bleed to death
